Half Hex Pattern B

Half Hex Pattern B

I have been a huge fan of Clayhaus ceramics since they launched. I see their work in many projects around town and all over design sites (most recently in the new desert Eichler!) so I thought that since they are right in my backyard that I would see if they would let me tour their studio and guess what? They said yes!  I was so excited to be able to meet these incredibly talented local makers in real life, I felt like I already sort of knew them since I had been following their business for some time.

I met up with one of the owners Megan who gave me a tour of the studio and offices which are located in a very sweet sleepy little town just a few minutes outside of Portland. The warehouse is busy but with a mellow air about it, laid back at the moment that I was there but looking at their orders I am sure they have their fair amount of rushes and temporary chaos.  Hanging on the walls are samples of designs and color palettes from their collections that make a modern design enthusiast swoon. I immediately (mentally) installed their gorgeous Apeture design in a lovely turquoise in my new kitchen…so I’ve added it to my wish list for the future reno.  They were so kind to show me how they prep and cut tiles, where they apply the glaze, the kilns, shipping department. Yes, they do it all here by hand with local clay, use renewable energy, and donate their usable seconds and broken tiles to local school programs.

Check out their website here to view their collections but if you are more of a touchy feely type of buyer, then you can see their collections in person at Pental Granite and Marble or stop by their studio (maybe clear it with them first).

Thanks for having me out Clayhaus!
