The Residence

The interior features Zaik’s trademark vaulted wood ceilings and walls of glass. The use of natural wood on the ceilings and floors and stone for the hearth are hallmarks of the Northwest Regional style and Zaik was exceptional at placing just the right amount to accompany the natural palette while keeping the design intelligently minimalist.

Zaik made many site visits with the owners to determine the perfect placement on their gently sloped forested lot. The Architect

The career of architect Saul Zaik (1926-2020) spanned decades and yielded an innovative and renowned portfolio. Influenced early in his career by visionary local architects such as Pietro Belluschi, John Yeon, Van Evra Bailey and John Storrs, Zaik was a member of 14th Street Gang, a group of Portland-based practitioners who distinguished themselves by designing cutting-edge Pacific Northwest Modern homes and interiors.

Zaik is primarily known for his single-family residences and vacation homes, including the celebrated Feldman House (1956) and the octagonal Zidell House (1970) which sits atop a 48-foot tall ship’s mast. Zaik also designed homes and buildings at two beloved Oregon landmarks — Sunriver and Salishan — and helped oversee the restoration of the Vista House in the Columbia River Gorge.
