Classic Meets Modern

In Portland, at times it feels like finding the right modern home is more like finding a needle in a haystack. In some cases, the home search is driven primarily by school districts or specific neighborhood wants which in turn trump the modern exterior. Portland is full of  beautiful old, classic home styles like bungalows, foursquare, victorian, and prairie style homes.

These homes provide good, solid bones plus:

  • high ceilings providing natural light
  • clean lines in original woodwork
  • beautiful wood floors
  • built ins

There is a fast growing trend of homeowners using the classic home shell and creating a modern interior  with decor and well planned interior design. Think Ace Hotel, classic restored buildings rich with beautiful original woodwork and tile, brick painted white, decorated with Eames shell rockers, Nelson bubble lamps, mid century metal desks and platform beds.

Formal living room walls are being opened up to flow through to the kitchen and less formal living space.  Horizontal lines are replacing decorative victorian porch rails and traditional fencing. Country kitchens are going stainless with concrete or soap stone counters, and subway tiles.

“The bungalow had more to do with how Americans live today than any other building that has gone remotely by the name of architecture.”  ~ Russell Lynes
