Pietro Belluschi

Pietro was born in Ancona, Italy in 1899 where he served in the Italian forces during WWI.  After the war, Belluschi earned a degree in civil engineering at the University of Rom. Belluschi moved to the US in 1923 and recieved a 2nd degree in civil engineering from Cornell University.  After college, Belluschi joined the architectural office of A.E Doyle in Portland.  While working at A.E Doyle, Belluschi very quickly became chief designer and in 1933 he became a partner.   By 1943, Belluschi had bought out all of the other partners and was practicing in his own name.

Belluschi is one of the leaders in the development of American Modern Architecture, heavily influenced by the International Style.  Belluschi’s ability to incorporate the natural materials of the NW in combination with the clean lines of the International Style birthed the Northwest Regional Style of architecture.

Belluschi passed away February 14th, 1994.
