The Frank Shell residential projects seem to be having tough luck in today’s market. The past home that I featured by Shell is still on market going on a couple of years.
Enter Frank Shell home #2 on market that is also a bank owned home and at this moment is far from a fixer. This Shell designed mid century modern home is located in NW Portland on a large 3/4 acre lot on a dead end street and was originally designed by Shell for a local doctor. I toured this home the other day and the previous owners had put a lot of money into high end upgrades and restoration of this home, it’s sad that it went to the bank but someone lucky buyer will benefit from all of their hard work at it’s current sticker price of just $595k.

I don’t think that this homes location is meant to be a secret but I had a hard time finding out exactly where it was located. There were clues in many of the posts about it like, “close to Seven Virtues cafe” and “located in the N Tabor neighborhood”. So I headed out to that general area and within minutes stumbled across the Corehaus building site (located on NE 61st Pl between Oregon and Hoyt). Due to it’s close-in location and availability of vacant lots, this highly walkable neighborhood is becoming a small hotbed for new sustainable construction with contemporary modern home design.
The Corehaus is designed by architect Robert Hawthorne and it’s modest goal is to be the model for all future in-fill. As a Passive House design, the Corehaus concept is to design a home so efficient and highly tuned that the furnace can be eliminated resulting in a home that uses 75-90% less energy than a normal home.
This Corehaus is priced well for being new, sustainable, architecturally designed construction and for it’s location at just $330k. (PENDING)

After spending way too much time drooling over their website, I finally took a couple of minutes out of my day to stop by Hive Modern’s showroom on NW Glisan in downtown Portland to touch and feel their fabulous modern offerings for your contemporary modern or mid century modern home. The showroom is a small, light and bright well utilized space that is merchandised very beautifully. They sell well designed furniture, lighting, housewares, decor and have a good children’s selection. The list of designers that they sell is long and includes favorites such as Eames, Saarinen, Panton, Noguchi, Nelson and a lot more to browse here. If you live in the Portland area or plan to visit, make sure Hive is on the must visit list.
